This sermon:

A New Covenant

A new covenant with us was instigated by Jesus when he walked this earth a little over 2000 years ago. He replaced the Old Testament covenant, including what we know as the 10 Commandments. And he actually fulfilled many of the old requirements by his death on the cross, which also replaced the repetitive sacrificial system. God partnered with the human race to cause his creation to flourish. God laid down the law for us to follow, until the time of Jesus. But humans did not want to partner with God, and they rebelled. And we are still in rebellion because we want to be masters of our own fate, and captains of our own destiny. So humankind broke this covenant with God, and so we plunged ourselves, and our world into a very different course. A course that is out of step with God. God has given us free will to elect to do what we want, but he warns us that there are consequences. Thankfully, God is a God of love, and he had planned the way to bring his creation back to its original state. God is merciful and forgives our mistakes, errors, injustices, and corruptions, because he loves us. But the consequences for our actions remain, and also the consequences from actions of others that may hurt us. We are accountable for our failures and sins, so we deserve the death penalty, but God forgives us because Jesus died in our place – his New Covenant.
