This sermon:

Can you take it?

Number 3 in the series “Questions Jesus Asked“.
Two of Jesus’ disciples asked him to elevate them to a place of prominence in his glory, referring to when he reigns as king, which would be in heaven. Jesus then asked them if they could meet God’s requirements for what they were asking (Mark 10:35-40). The meaning of Jesus’ question being ‘CAN YOU TAKE IT? that is, to take on the challenge that this would bring.’ What his disciples just asked was most insensitive and heartless, because Jesus had just finished telling them of his impending brutal death, which records show was the third time that he had told them this. The other disciples were also indignant that these two wanted themselves to be elevated above the others. Seen as the worst request that anyone could make.

Jesus goes on to remind them that their request for glory is actually a request for suffering, because that is the way of the cross. He explains this by asking them “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?” Jeff refers us to many Bible references to ‘The Cup’ and ‘Baptism’, to help us realise that these are not just idle symbols or events, but advising us that we need to take on board their true meaning. In Jesus’ Kingdom – greatness consists of self-giving. The pouring out of the self to serve others to the glory of God. We are made in the image of Jesus, and so we are entreated to do the same for others. Which is exactly what Jesus did, as the greatest of example for us to follow, to follow in Jesus’ footsteps.
