Many people think of Romans as Paul’s most theological letter—and it is. But before we dive into its deep truths, it’s worth noticing the deep relationships behind it. In this sermon, we step back from the famous chapters of doctrine and look instead at the people and passion that fill Paul’s heart in Romans 15 and 16.

Paul had never visited Rome, yet he knew and loved many of the believers there personally. He longed to see them—not just for fellowship, but to strengthen them through gospel truth. This desire shows us that rich theology and warm Christian love are not opposites. In Paul’s mind, they go hand in hand.

At a time when many churches are shifting focus from doctrine to community, Paul reminds us that love and truth must grow together. A loving church community may draw people in—but only the gospel will keep them rooted when things get hard. As we begin our series in Romans, this message sets the tone. Paul’s love for the believers in Rome flows from the gospel he preached. And it’s that same gospel—the righteousness of God revealed in Christ—that we’ll be unpacking in the weeks to come.
