Do you always believe what you are told? For example, what is in the media, or what is popular in social media posts, or YouTube videos, what you read in books, or what your minister preaches in church. Can you have confidence in all that is recorded in the Christian Bible? There are 613 laws in the Bible given through Moses to Israel. Should all of these be obeyed? It is worth noting that Jesus revealed that many of these laws have been fulfilled (Matthew 5:17). Not done away with, but dealt with. So the sacrificial laws are not simply gone – OUT WITH THE OLD, but the moral laws do remain, and Jesus helps us to understand what is IN WITH THE NEW. We need to weigh up what we read and hear, reading the Bible for ourselves in an appropriate translation for us, referring to respected commentaries, and analysing the Bible together to reveal true meanings. This is just one reason why attending a church is so important.
The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapter 5) is a defining statement by Jesus that gives us a very clear pointer as to how we, the followers of Jesus, regard the Old Testament law.
