#3 in the Series: ‘The Book of Psalms’

Psalm 21, which was preached two weeks ago speaks of Jesus Christ, but the next three psalms (22, 23 and 24) are much more obviously about Jesus. In this Psalm 22 we are confronted with crucifixion, and so many Christians refer to it as “The Psalm of The Cross”, while the early church called this psalm “The 5th Gospel”. It includes a description of a crucifixion, describing precisely the agony and death of King David’s distant son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Interestingly, this form of execution was not invented for another 1,000 years by the Roman Empire. We would find it difficult if we didn’t have the New Testament to help us to understand. In fact, much of the Old Testament is quoted in the New Testament, including 13 quotes from this Psalm 22 which are in the New Testament. Jeff ties together the Old and New Testaments for just some of these quotes, and he helps us understand what God is telling us through this psalm.
