This is the 3rd in the series on the Bible book of Hebrews, which is a pastoral book, not a dry theological statement but pastoral letters in real human context. The key message is that we share in Christ IF we hold on to the end. Hebrews chapter 3 is all about, firstly Jesus’ faithfulness, and then our faithfulness in response. So we need to shape our life around Jesus’ example. But there is a cost to us when following Jesus – but the cost is well worth it. It is not money or time but devotion and how we are seen by being devoted to Jesus. We live in a broken world, so in this life, followers of Jesus also do suffer, and so it is fitting in a way that so has Jesus Christ suffered, though far more than we could ever suffer. This can challenge us and so the writer of Hebrews repeats the verses in Psalm 95, but with explanation – see also Hebrews 3:7, 3:15 and 4:7.
Church is not just about attendance, coming to sing or to pray. It is about building a personal relationship with Jesus and growing to know Him. And this can be a challenge, because Jesus wants you to be like Him. However, when we get it wrong and do not do what is right, then thankfully Jesus has a way out for His children. God, in Christ, has been incredibly faithful to us in dying in the cross so that we can have Jesus’ free gift of unmerited forgiveness.
